Don Newcombe now lives in California, where the baseball is about of gloomy as the smog. But during a recent visit to New York, the former Brooklyn Dodger pitcher could sense the same kind of stirring in the city that he felt more than 40 years when the prospect of a Subway Series in October created summer-long excitement.
