SUMMER OF ’77
Remember the sizzling, scintillating summer of 1977 when Billy Martin’s Yankees stormed past the Red Sox and went on to capture their first World Championship in 15 years by beating the Dodgers in six games as Reggie Jackson blasted three home runs in the grand finale?
In this series, The Post takes you back 30 years to one of the greatest seasons in Yankee history.
AUGUST 11, 1977
YANKEES 6, ATHLETICS 3
Gullett is probably heading for the disabled list.
Before last night’s 6-3 beating of the A’s at the Stadium, Billy Martin and Gabe Paul got together to discuss the pitching, which, as much as anything, is responsible for the Yankees’ third-place position.
They decided that Gullett’s aching left arm will be tested before tomorrow night’s doubleheader with the Angels, and if it still aches, he will probably be assigned to the 21-day disabled list.
And so the Yankees continued to be plagued by arm miseries.
Catfish Hunter, whose arm always hurts, and Ed Figueroa, whose arm usually hurts, pitch tomorrow night. Ken Holtzman, who hasn’t pitched since July 16 and hasn’t started since July 3, goes against Nolan Ryan Saturday.
Meanwhile, Ron Guidry was picking up his ninth win with seven strong innings and Dick Tidrow was saving it with two not-so-strong innings. And, despite some questions about Martin keeping Reggie Jackson in the cleanup spot he thinks he deserves, it was a happy Yankee clubhouse.
