* I have a 7-year-old son who has absolutely fallen in love with football, and sports in general, since he played his first flag football season this past fall. I also have a 4-year-old who is at least mildly interested in the game. Both are getting ready for the Super Bowl. I know going in that I will have to explain over and over again that the showboating and me-first displays that we will see on the field (i.e., from the overrated Jeremy Shockey) are not the right things to do and that it should always be about the team first. However, that is not even close to the worst thing I will have to protect them from that night. How am I supposed to explain the ads for the following: Go-Daddy, Tim Tebow and his mom discussing anti-abortion topics, Viagra, Cialis or any other male enhancement, over-the-top movie promos like “Wolfman,” over-the-top CBS show promos like “Two and a Half Men” and whatever the beer, soda, and snack companies have in store? I guess I can count on the fact that since the game won’t end until at least 10, the boys might only be bombarded with this stuff until halftime. What is a guy who just wants to watch football with his family to do?

Johnny be gone

* Wow, would someone please tell Yankees fans to relax over Johnny Damon? So, a player has decided to jump off the good-ship Yankeepop to try to get extra money elsewhere. How many players do the Yankees have right now that came to The Bronx for the extra money? If players wanted to play for the all-important Yankees, they would prove it by taking less money. Don’t blame Damon’s agent, Scott Boras, either. Damon wanted $11 million per year and the Yankees offered $7M, so all the team history, the chance to win again and the fans aren’t as important to Damon as you think. Have fun playing to 12,000 a night in Oakland, Johnny, and not playing a meaningful game after August.

* Randy Winn, Nick Johnson and Curtis Granderson, the three players the Yankees have slotted in to replace Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Melky Cabrera are all excellent players who have proven themselves in the major leagues. Nonetheless, as a Yankees fan, it hurts to see those three contributors to the 2009 championship depart from the team. Maybe the new players will fill their shoes, but I have a sneaking suspicion that before the season is over, Yankees fans will be longing for the competitive spirit Damon, Matsui and Cabrera brought to the table on a nightly basis. It wouldn’t surprise me if one or all three ended up back in pinstripes before the end of the season.

Jet’s the ticket

* Thanks to Rex Ryan, Mark Sanchez and the whole Jets team for an exciting season. They went well beyond preseason expectations, and kept the excitement up until the last quarter of the last playoff game. I think a healthy Kris Jenkins might have made the difference against Peyton Manning and the Colts. The rookies, Ryan, Sanchez and Shonn Greene, will be in their second year with a new stadium for next season. It should be interesting.

* The Colts were lucky last week when the Jets came close to beating them in the AFC Championship game. It looked like Mark Sanchez conjured up the long-dormant spirit of Joe Namath, who beat the heavily favored Colts 41 years ago. That will teach the Colts not to rest their starters at the end of the season. By allowing the Jets to win that regular-season game, it helped get them into the playoffs and it almost came back to bite them in the bippy.

No Green surprise

* What a surprise the Jets couldn’t win when the other team didn’t throw two interceptions and miss two or three field goals. The Jets deserved to be in the playoffs as much as the Raiders (at least the Raiders beat the defending Super Bowl champion Steelers this season).

* Here’s the difference between the Mets and Jets and the Yankees and Giants: The Mets and Jets talk about winning championships; the Yankees and Giants actually win them.

Favre and away

* I was very disappointed in the performance of Brett Favre against the Saints last weekend. I thought for sure he would throw at least three interceptions.

* Are we going to have to hear all the Brett Favre retirement drama again? Please, Brett, just retire already. And don’t go away mad, just go away!
