COLUMBIA, S.C. — Central Florida versus Duke — a Clash of the Titans — and 7-foot-6, 315-pound Tacko Fall has poked the bear.
“I won’t allow him to put me on one of his highlight tapes,” Fall said.
The bear who will be stalking Fall on Sunday night is 6-foot-7, 285-pound Zion Williamson, who swears he won’t have added motivation.
“Not at all,” Zion said. “I’m not really focused on that because that’s one play that can, or might not happen, so I can’t like focus on that, I’m focused on trying to win.”
The mild-mannered giant from Senegal didn’t seem overly concerned.
“I don’t know what his mindset is so I cannot speak for him,” Tacko said, “but I can speak for myself. I’m just going to go out there and try to win the ballgame and do everything I can to help my team win the ballgame. Basketball plays are going to happen. I’m going to be out there and be aggressive and be the protector that I am. Zion is obviously a very talented kid, great kid. I’ve seen nothing but positive things about him, and great high ceiling too.
“He’s going to do his job and I’m going to do my job, and whatever happens happens.”
A Sweet 16 will happen for 18-year-old Zion or 23-year-old Tacko.
“Nobody’s going to be intimidated on the court,” Zion said. “I mean, it’s not like he came out and just said it himself, like that’s the media asking him those questions. He’s not going to sit here and say, ‘Yeah, he’s going to dunk on me,’ like he’s a competitor, so obviously he’s going to say he’s going to block my shot. Like that’s just basketball.”
This is hardly Wilt Chamberlain versus Bill Russell, but it captures imaginations.
“I don’t want it to be like a freak show between Zion and I,” Tacko said. “It’s bigger than that. It’s UCF versus Duke.”
Zion has played against Florida State’s 7-foot-4 Christ Koumadje. He got poked in the eye late in the first half and finished with 11 points in 17 minutes in a January win, and scored 21 points in Duke’s ACC Tournament victory over the Seminoles. Koumadje played only nine minutes.
UCF will zone Duke, but there will be times when the two giants meet by the basket. Tacko is nowhere near the athlete that Zion is. But he collected 18 rebounds and blocked five shots Friday night against VCU, and alters many others.
But CBS’ Bill Raftery says Tacko Beware.
“I would not bet against that happening though,” Raftery told The Post. “I think he’s so forceful, he can hold him off and still dunk, I think, if that happens.
“That’s sort of throwing fuel to the fire though, to challenge like that to a guy like that. For the first time Zion might say, ‘I’m a dunker,’ just to prove this thing now.”
Duke legend Grant Hill is looking forward to see how it all unfolds.
“I imagine there’ll be some confrontations at the rim, and it should be fun to watch,” Hill said.
Duke probably won’t be a full strength with reserve forward Jack White likely to sit out a second straight game.
White, who’s averaged more than 21 minutes a game off the bench, was out for the first-round win over North Dakota State with a hamstring injury. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said White worked out some Saturday and will test himself in warm-ups before Sunday’s matchup, but “we don’t think he’s going to play.”
Krzyzewski said 6-11 center Marques Bolden, who returned Friday after missing eight games with a knee sprain, came out of the win in good shape and will play against the Knights.
