Emma Raducanu’s rapid rise to fame has been a whirlwind journey for the 18-year-old tennis sensation, who was featured in British Vogue earlier this week.
In a fashionably sporty photoshoot, the British athlete is featured wearing a variety of Nike sneakers, paired with high-fashion looks — while paying homage to her beloved sport. Some shots show Raducanu in action, posing with her tennis racket.
Emma Raducanu spoke to British Vogue about her tennis rise, which has continued at the US Open. Scott Trindle/Vogue MagazineWhile her rise to tennis popularity throughout the summer has painted her as an outgoing, high-octane teen, Raducanu is admittedly the “quiet one” who “didn’t really raise her hand” in class. That’s how she told the magazine she believes her classmates viewed her.
And, she’s still navigating being a traditional teenager, while becoming one of tennis’ most interesting stars. For example, on the night before her photoshoot, Raducanu attended her school prom, which took place on a golf course in Orpington.

Raducanu outlasted Olympic gold medalist Belinda Bencic in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the semi-final.
“I think the confidence comes from just inner belief,” Raducanu told British Vogue. “My mum comes from a Chinese background, they have very good self-belief. It’s not necessarily about telling everyone how good you are, but it’s about believing it within yourself. I really respect that about the culture.”
Raducanu, who will turn 19 in November, also recalled one of her more challenging moments in the tennis spotlight — when she pulled out of Wimbledon in July, due to breathing issues while down 6-4, 3-0 to Croatian-Australian star Ajla Tomljanovic.
At the time, some media critics and broadcasters ran with opinions that she had retired from the match due to mental health pressures.
To Raducanu, there is always going to be someone who “has something to say, and I respect everyone’s thoughts and decisions. So I don’t really hold anything against anyone.”
In the aftermath of her Wimbledon withdrawal, Raducanu made “a purposeful decision to not check social media” or the news. She even handed off her phone to her physical therapist.
In the end, Raducanu has no regrets, and knew “it was the best decision for my health and my body” to retire from the match. In the wake of Naomi Osaka’s openness about mental health struggles, Raducanu said, you must “prioritize yourself.”
“If that’s the best thing for her health, mental health, and wellbeing then I think that that’s the right thing to do, because at the end of the day, you’re on this journey alone, no matter how many people are in your corner,” Raducanu said.
