The birth of Andy Murray’s first child won’t be a singles match.
The No. 2 tennis player in the world faces a potential break point: Longtime love Kim Sears is due with the couple’s first child in February, and the Australian Open runs from mid-January until Jan. 31.
For him, if Sears goes into early labor, it’s no contest.
“I’d go home. For sure, yes,” Murray told the Daily Mail. “It’s obviously important. I want to make sure at the beginning I’m there as much as I can be to try and help out, just be there for whatever is really required of me.”
Though Murray has never won the season’s first major, he is a four-time finalist — including last year’s loss to the Novak Djokovic — and is expected to make a deep run. He said his parental obligations come first, though, especially after seeing how vocal Sears can be when things don’t go her way.
The stunner became a sensation last January after her diamond sparkler received prominent airtime, not to mention the parade of F-bombs she dropped towards Murray’s opponent, Tomas Berydych, after he scooped up her beau’s former assistant coach ahead of the heated match.
