Destanee Aiava, a 22-year-old Australian tennis player, revealed she tried to take her own life last month in a candid note on Instagram.
“The night of Easter Sunday (17th April) I was going to throw myself off a bridge onto the M1, 3 people drove by, dragged me off the rails and drove me home,” Aiava wrote last week in an Instagram post that included photos of the smiling tennis player.
“I did not want to make it to my 22nd birthday, but I know my family and friends would be happy to know I’m alive on this day that’s meant to be special,” said Aiava, who celebrated her birthday on May 10. “Sometimes people you come across in life can make you feel that you’re unworthy of being loved, but at the end of the day I’ve learnt.”
Aiava — who currently sits at No. 463 on the WTA rankings — most recently suffered a loss in the first round of the 2022 Australian Open in the women’s singles qualifying.
The Melbourne native has competed in the Australian Open five times, but has never made it past the first round. She reached a career-high WTA ranking of No. 147 in Sept. 2017.
In late March, Aiava qualified for the quarterfinals of an ITF tournament in Canberra before she was defeated by fellow Aussie and No. 6 seed, Olivia Gedecki.
