Indian Wells might be the breeding ground for women’s tennis breakthroughs.

Just a year after Naomi Osaka won the BNP Paribas Open as an unseeded 20-year-old, and then won two Grand Slam titles months apart, another unseeded youngster found a way to make Osaka’s magical ride look commonplace in comparison.

Canadian Bianca Andreescu became the latest giant-slayer in California over the past week, where the teen wildcard topped nearly a half dozen ranked opponents to win at Indian Wells, including a miraculous 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 against world No. 4 ranked Angelique Kerber on Sunday.

Andreescu, who started the year ranked No. 152 in the world, became the first-ever wildcard champion at Indians wells. She also became the tournament’s youngest winner since Serena Williams in 1999.

Andreescu, just 18, had finished last year ranked near No. 200 in the world but stepped up her approach in the offseason by getting healthy and focusing on her mental game. She cited yoga and meditation for helping her mature mentally through matches, which was displayed when she carved out upsets against former world No. 1’s in Garbine Muguruza and Kerber, while beating perennial contender No. 6 seeded Elina Svitolina.

Despite battling cramps for most of the tournament, Andreescu found a way to keep herself in all matches, partly due to her ability to focus her mind elsewhere.

“My mom introduced me to [meditation] when I was really young,” Andreescu said. “I was maybe about 12. Ever since then I have been meditating and I do a lot of yoga.

“I don’t only work on my physical aspect. I also work on the mental, because that’s also very, very important. It’s definitely showing through my matches where I’m staying in the present moment a lot of the time. I don’t like to focus on what just happened or in the future.”

Andreescu first win spiked her up to No. 24 in the WTA Tour rankings this week. She’s slated to play the Miami Open next.
