Billie Jean King said she has asked Olympic tennis officials to consider the team format of World Team Tennis in the future. She hasn’t gotten far.
For now she will have to settle for Friday’s championship match in Forest Hills between the San Diego Aviators and Orange County Breakers. It is the first time WTT has held its finals at Forest Hills, the former site of the US Open that converted its stadium into a concert venue but kept the outer tennis courts for its club.
At King’s request, the club’s new owners agreed to place a tennis court in the stadium to host WTT matches this summer.
King founded WTT in 1974 and played for the New York Sets and Apples. She said she firmly believes in the format. Five sets are played, men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, and mixed doubles. Each single game counts toward the team score.
“I want tennis to be a team sport,’’ King said. “It’s all for the fans. The sound system is great. We play loud music. Even if you don’t love tennis, you’ll have fun.’’
