Genie Bouchard’s admirer is stooping a bit lower in the game of choice for their fortuitous date.
After a Twitter fan scored a meet-up with Bouchard by betting her the Patriots would come back to beat the Falcons in Super Bowl LI, the two were headed to Barclays Center to watch the 9-47 Nets, the NBA’s worst team, lose 129-125 to the Bucks on Wednesday.
But surely all 20-year-old Missouri student John Goehrke cares about is the tennis star and Sports Illustrated swimsuit model he’ll be sitting next to after flying into New York on Wednesday afternoon. Judging from the Twitter evidence above, the date appeared to start on the right foot.
“I want to honor my word and stay true to it, so I’m going on that date and that’s actually tonight,” Bouchard
. “We’re going to go to the Brooklyn Nets game. He’s flying in this afternoon, so I look forward to meeting him tonight and I hope he enjoys it. And I hope it’s not too awkward.”
The Canadian, currently ranked No. 44 in the world, wouldn’t admit to wishing she never accepted the bet, but she did reveal the worry that initially held her back from going out with Goehrke.
“After all the media attention it got, it was something I could, first of all, not back out of. There was no chance,” she said. “I was worried, however, when I looked at his Twitter profile as soon as I lost the bet and his profile picture was a picture of Tiger Woods. I was like, ‘It’s one of those Twitter fans. I don’t even know what he looks like. What is going to happen?’ But it turns out he seems to be a very nice boy.”
After Bouchard agreed to Goehrke’s bet and the story went viral, the student quickly changed his Twitter photo from one of his favorite golfer to a smiling shot of himself.
