Novak Djokovic stands alone.

The Serbian superstar defeated Casper Ruud Sunday, 7-6 (7-1,) 6-3, 7-5, in the men’s final to win his third French Open and his 23rd career Grand Slam title, putting him in sole possession of first place on the all-time list of men’s singles major winners.

Djokovic broke a tie with Rafael Nadal, who has 22 Grand Slam victories and missed the 2023 French Open due to hip surgery.

“A Grand Slam is a Grand Slam — four biggest tournaments that we have in the history of our sport, tennis. Every single player dreams of being on this stage and winning the trophy at least once in their career. I am beyond fortunate in my life to win, 23 times, Grand Slams,” Djokovic, wearing a red jacket with 23 embroidered on it, said after the win. “It’s an incredible, incredible feeling.”

Margaret Court is the only player with more singles majors than Djokovic at 24; Serena Williams has 23.

“Many congrats on this amazing achievement @DjokerNole,” Nadal wrote on Twitter after Djokovic’s win, with a clapping emoji at the end. “23 is a number that just a few years back was imposible [sic] to think about, and you made it! Enjoy it with your family and team!”

The 36-year-old Djokovic is the first man in tennis history to win each of the four majors at least three times.

Ruud is now 0-5 against Djokovic and has yet to win a set against him.

The 24-year-old remains in search of his first Grand Slam title.

He lost to Nadal in last year’s French Open final and fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2022 U.S. Open final.

Djokovic, who is halfway to a calendar Grand Slam, is once again the world No. 1 with the win, overtaking Alcaraz, whom Djokovic defeated in the French Open semifinals after Alcaraz cramped up and looked like a shell of himself in the third and fourth sets.

Djokovic’s previous French Open titles came in 2016 and 2021.
