Roger Federer barely survived the Australian Open madness.

The six-time champ in Melbourne won in five sets over Australian veteran John Millman in a roller-coaster third-round match Friday that ended after midnight locally. Federer, 38, won the second and third set after dropping the opener, but could not put away the 30-year-old journeyman.

There were no breaks in the final set and Millman, ranked 47th, pulled ahead 8-4 in the extended, match-deciding tiebreak after hitting three pressure-packed winners. However, Federer won six straight points to win the fifth-set breaker 10-8.

Serena Williams had fallen to Wang Qiang earlier in the day and Coco Gauff stunned Naomi Osaka in the night session. The day started with Caroline Wozniacki’s career ending with a loss to Ons Jabeur.

Federer moves on, though, and plays Marton Fucsovics in the fourth round.
