Just over a month after Serena Williams announced her “evolution” away from the game of tennis in an August essay in Vogue, the 23-time Grand Slam champ is now hinting that she could pull a Tom Brady and un-retire.
Williams, 40, who has been making the rounds in the New York media this week, appeared on “The Tonight Show” on Tuesday and host Jimmy Fallon asked if there is a chance she could follow in Brady’s footsteps and return to her sport.
“You know what? Tom Brady started an amazing trend,” Williams said, referring to Brady’s brief 40-day retirement earlier this year. The Buccaneers quarterback announced his return for a 23rd NFL season in March.
“That’s what I want to say,” Williams said, laughing, adding later on that she plans to relax in her downtime.
Then, Williams made a Wednesday morning appearance on “Good Morning America” in Times Square, where she played coy about a possible return to playing pro again.
“I mean, you never know,” Williams said. “I’ve just been saying that I think Tom Brady started a really cool trend. And the way he did it, a few weeks, you know? So, yeah.”
Williams said she thinks she will remain a part of tennis in some capacity in her retirement.
“Tennis has given me so much and I feel like there is no way that I don’t want to be involved in tennis somehow in the future,” she said.
“I don’t know what that involvement is yet, but I do know that I love the sport so much, I love the game, I love everything about it. It has just been such a light in my life that I definitely want to keep something involved in there.”

The tennis icon gave one last twirl after losing to Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia in three sets in the third round of the tournament.
In a candid essay for Vogue magazine, published in early August, Williams said she was “evolving away from tennis,” following the year’s final major. She explained that she and husband Alexis Ohanian want to have another child.
The couple are already parents to a 4-year-old daughter, Olympia, who Williams said has been telling her parents that she wants to be a big sister.

“Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair,” Williams wrote. “If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family. Maybe I’d be more of a Tom Brady if I had that opportunity.
“Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia,” Williams recalled. “I was one of those annoying women who adored being pregnant and was working until the day I had to report to the hospital — although things got super complicated on the other side.”
