You just dropped your second design of “La Cortez” sneakers for Nike, inspired by NYC in autumn. What makes them an off-the-court-staple for you?
Maria Sharapova: I’ve always worn the “Cortez” because of its elegant shape and iconic sole. No matter how big, loud or bulky today’s sneakers are becoming, the “Cortez” always feels fresh. It’s rare to find a shoe style that consistently feels on trend yet classic, as it was originally created in 1972.

MS: I was inspired by color palettes that are timeless in look and materials that are timeless in feel. The “swoosh” is embossed and minimal, while the tongue is more exposed, with a raw edge. And it’s an earth-tone color I look forward to wearing in the fall.
Are you a sneaker addict or a heel addict?
MS: I definitely have more sneakers than heels. But an occasional heel with denim and a simple tank feels sexy to wear.
What are your favorite fall trends?
MS: I love pairing oversize masculine pieces — blazers, white collared shirts — with more streamlined pants or pencil skirts. Or a simple camisole with baggy, rolled-up jeans and a silk jacket.
What are your thoughts on wearing cocktail dresses with sneakers?
MS: Yes, finally! I love pairing a simple slip dress with the “Cortez” for evening with an oversize blazer. It’s simple and fresh and will never go out of style.
