TEXANS TOAST
The Giants have won four games in a row by margins of 16, 13, 14 and 14 points, so even though the spread is inching into uncomfortable territory, it’s certainly not out of whack.
That streak includes two home wins – a 19-3 rout of the ‘Skins and a 17-3 shutdown of the Bucs on a day when a vicious wind vexed only the visitors.
David Carr comes in with decent numbers but off a benching. And the suspicion here is we’ll see more celebrations by the Big Blue Jumpshot Crew than meaningful completions to the NFL’s leading receiver, Andre Johnson.
Tom Coughlin has assured us there will be no Bear hunt until after the Texans are tackled.
Believe him.
The pick: Giants -13.
Chiefs (+2) over RAMS: A couple of 4-3 teams that have fared well against the opposite conference.
KC’s Damon Huard is 9-3 as a starter, and Larry Johnson, who rushed for 155 yards vs. Seattle last week, should find running room vs. a Rams D that gave up 216 yards on the ground in San Diego.
RAVENS (-3) over Bengals:
Perhaps the most stunning number from last week was the 35 points the Ravens scored in their win at New Orleans. If the offense can be this good with Brian Billick calling the plays, this becomes a scary team since it is fourth in the NFL with 91 points allowed.
JAGUARS (-91/2) over Titans:
It’s a little frightening to give near double digits with a Jags team that has totaled 20 points in two weeks and has injury questions at the QB position. But the defense will be stout after its clampdown on the Eagles, and one can sense an ambush similar to the Jags’ 410 win over the Jets last month.
REDSKINS (+3) over Cowboys:
In six days, the Cowboys went from a disgraceful mess with no QB to a surprise winner in Carolina, and now they’re road faves vs. their archrival.
The ‘Skins, at 2-5 and after a bye, will be taking one last shot to stay on the outer fringes of the wild-card hunt.
BILLS (-3) over Packers: Buffalo got smoked at home before the bye by the Patriots, but as Tim Sullivan points out in his Trend Setters, the Bills have a recent record of success against under.500 teams in their building.
Saints (-1) over BUCCANEERS:
Little worried about the Saints offense with both Reggie Bush and Joe Horn listed as questionable.
But the Bucs have scored 88 points all season, and 17 of those came on Ronde Barber INTs and a 62-yard FG two weeks ago. This team just doesn’t score.
Falcons (-51/2) over LIONS:
Lions were gashed on the ground by the Jets two weeks back and are still missing the interior of their line in Shaun Rogers (suspension) and Shaun Cody (injury). Now here come the Falcons, the NFL’s top rushing team.
Enough said.
BEARS (-131/2) over Dolphins:
The Bears are the first team in NFL history to win four in a row at home in the same season by 25 points or more, and have scored at least 34 in each of their home games. You want to go against that?
Vikings (-5) over 49ERS: Both teams got killed last week, but it’s difficult to make a case for a Niner bounce back because they’ve given up 38 points or more in four of their last five games.
CHARGERS (-121/2) over Browns:
Browns won’t be able to run it like they did against the Jets, and they won’t get the benefit of another hometown call. Eastern time zone teams routinely get crushed at Qualcomm.
STEELERS (-3) over Broncos:
Many may be stunned by the line, with a 2-5 favored over a 5-2.
But the Steelers (in the yardage rankings) have a better offense and defense than does Denver, and a team can’t be more desperate than the defending champs will be in this game.
PATRIOTS (-3) over Colts:
Wow, how do you give points to Peyton Manning two weeks in a row? Well, the Colts D has a lot of holes and Tom Brady will be able to find them in a variety of ways. Trust Bill Belichick will find a way to limit Manning on a night when the temps will be in the 30s and the field will resemble the surface of the moon.
MONDAY NIGHT SEAHAWKS (-7) over Raiders:
Raiders have covered three in a row and won their last two. But Andrew Walter was dreadful vs.
the Steelers and will have trouble with the noise in prime time at Qwest Field, especially if LaMont Jordan isn’t there to help.
BEST BETS: Bears, Falcons, Chargers.
LAST WEEK: 5-9.
BEST BETS: 0-3.
