Every Friday in NYP TV Sports, our sports television pullout that appears in the middle of the print edition and online, we present “Five Questions for ⦔
This is the 6th Question, where we post more of my interview.
This week I spoke with Tim McCarver.
Q: The arrival of Roger Clemens could play a huge role in determining the winner of the AL East. Where do you think he’ll end up?
A: If he goes to either one of those teams, it would be the Yankees. But what a gig he has! I mean, come on! Am I the only one out there thinking that Roger Clemens gets to pick a team in June, and to pitch mostly home games – I mean, that’s a pretty good gig. And he’s done it for the last several years. In the history of sports, I can’t think of a situation that has been this isolated, as far as any athlete being in that situation.
Q: Aside from the Mets, what other teams should opponents be wary of in the National League this year?
A: I like the Cubs. I like what they did in the offseason. I think they have a teriffic starting eight players. I think they’re going to score a lot of runs. Obviously, it depends on their pitching, but what team can’t you say that about? In the NL West, I like the Diamondbacks. Everybody’s picking the Dodgers, but I think the Diamondbacks are a fine, fine young ballclub. The Dodgers are good, but I think the Diamondbacks will be right there.
Q: Any sleeper teams we should keep an eye on?
A: Florida. Why nobody has talked about Florida is beyond me. They won 78 games last year, and just because last year’s Manager of the Year – Joe Girardi – left, doesn’t mean the Marlins are going to collapse. They are a team with a lot of fine young talent.
