Casual Friday here at Mark My Words. And an early happy Father’s Day to you all.

Let’s get to the list – the best lines from sports comedies ever. Enjoy – and thanks to those who contributed suggestions. And to IMDB for help with some of the quotes:

10. “And I say, ‘Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.’ And he says, ‘Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.’ So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.”

A classic from Bill Murray in Caddyshack.

9. “Wish we had him two years ago.”

“We did.”

“Four years ago then.”

A great exchange between the third base coach and the GM in Major League regarding Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger).

8. “It is hard work making something this pretty look like a chump. So I must be doing it for a reason.”

“Well, you got me convinced. Whatever the reason may be.”

Kadeem Hardison and Woody Harrelson in White Men Can’t Jump. Kadeem Hardison, by the way? Complete scene-stealer in that movie. Tremendous.

7. “You should try to quit. They say its bad for your heart, your lungs. It quickens the aging process.”

“Who’s done more research than the good people at the American Tobaccco Industry? They say it’s harmless. Why would they lie? If you’re dead, you can’t smoke.”

Randy Quaid and Woody Harrelson in Kingpin – an oft-forgotten great sports movie. Of course, bowling probably isn’t a sport. But for these purposes, it is.

6. “That. . . is a really interesting painting.”

“Thank you. Yeah, that’s me, taking the bull by the horns. It’s how I handle my business. It’s a metaphor.”

“I get it.”

“But that actually happened, though.”

Phenomenal exchange between Christine Taylor and Ben Stiller in Dodgeball. Narrowly missing the cut: when Stiller rages, “Nobody makes me bleed my own blood – nobody!”

5. “They tell us you’re a pitcher. You’re sure not much of a dresser. We wear caps and sleeves at this level, son.”

Manager Lou Brown to Ricky “Wild Thing” Vaughn in Major League.

4. “Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You’ll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you’ll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press’ll think you’re colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.”

Crash Davis to Nuke LaLoosh in Bull Durham. Teaching.

3. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever. My man John Keats said that. John Keats, that’s my man.”

Kadeem Hardison, again, in White Men Can’t Jump. Much better than the oft-quoted “We goin’ Sizzzz-ler, we goin’ Sizzzz-ler!”

2. “It feels out there. I mean, it’s a major rush. I mean, it feels radical in kind of a tubular sort of way, but most of all, it feels out there.”

“Hopeless. This is utterly [freaking] hopeless.”

Crash after overhearing Nuke in Bull Durham and realizing what he’s going to be dealing with all season.

1. “This guy here is dead!”

“Cross him off, then.”

Nothing sums up Major League better than this.
