There have been times this year when Andy Pettitte has looked more done than Mike Mussina did two years ago; then, there are nights like last night when he looks to be sipping water from the same Fountain of Youth that Mussina discovered around this time last year. Of all the things that the Yankees have to be pleased about, an effort like that from the No. 5 starter is precisely the kind of thing that makes you believe they will absolutely keep pace with the Sox and stay out ahead of the Rays the rest of the way.

John Franco spent an awful lot of time around the Mets, and is still paid by the Mets, and he has every right to say that the Mets are selfish and have no heart and whatever other observations he may have. And as someone who worked as an instructor with the Mets in spring training, it’s not like he hasn’t been around the club at all. But I do find it interesting that while it was Mike Piazza who issued the famous “voice from the grave” complaint when Keith Hernandez made similarly frank observations about the 2002 Mets, Franco — who was hurt that year — had little problem later on saying he also took issue with what Hernandez had said. Just another example of how vast the chasm is between being on the club and around it.
