Today’s column focused, of course, on Connecticut and its continuing response, or non-response, to the Yahoo! report that alleges serious wrongdoing within the Huskies program. But what I also found most curious was how different Jim Calhoun was yesterday from the combative, defiant version of himself we saw when a political activist infiltrated a press conference not long ago to ask Calhoun about his salary. A good guess: He knew he was on the side of the angels that time. This time, not so much.

Most places in college basketball, you can feel bad about what’s happening to Billy Gillispie at Kentucky, a coach who’s about to get run out of Lexington after just two years. But since that is the ultimate buyer-beware job in sports — you know exactly what you’re getting into when you take that gig — mostly what you feel is empathy for whoever — Billy Donovan? Tom Izzo? Travis Ford? — winds up becoming Gillispie’s successor.
