Roy Boe was one of the last of the great maverick owners, and while his run with the Nets and the Islanders didn’t last as long as he’d hoped, he was the man most responsible for bringing big-time sports to Long Island, which as a Long Island kid meant he was always a hero of mine. It also bears remembering that for as much of a punchline as the Islanders and Nets have become, they brought SIX championships to Nassau County, or as many as the Yankees have brought to the Bronx since 1963. THe good folks at NJ.com were nice enough to re-post this column I wrote about Boe for the Star-Ledger when the Nets made the NBA Finals for the first time seven years ago.
