With the NCAA Tournament set to start on Tuesday, here are the top local players in the field of 68:
All-Area NCAA Tournament Team
First Team
Jr. G Tyus Battle (17.2 ppg, 3.2 rpg), Syracuse, Edison, N.J.
Syracuse’s leading scorer the past two years, the Orange will go only as far as the 6-foot-6 junior can take them.
Jr. G Ty Jerome (13.5 ppg, 5.3 apg), Virginia, New Rochelle
The gritty former Iona Prep star has made strides each season, raising his shooting percentage, scoring and assist totals again this year to garner second team All-ACC honors.
Sr. F Eric Paschall (16.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg), Villanova, Dobbs Ferry
A potential late first-round pick, the sculpted 6-foot-8 Paschall transitioned from role player to go-to guy this year for Villanova, keying the Wildcats’ fifth Big East regular-season title in six years.

Buzzer beaters
Best Manute Bol Impression
Meet Tacko Fall, UCF’s 7-foot-6 big man from Senegal, who does his best impression of Bol, the former 7-foot-7 NBA player from Sudan. Fall’s mother came from Senegal to UCF’s senior day on March 7, the first time Fall had seen her in seven years. Fall leads the country in field-goal percentage and ranks 14th in blocks.
Best Stephen Curry Impression
Wofford’s Fletcher Magee has already broken Curry’s mark for career 3-pointers made and needs to make just three more in the NCAA Tournament to pass Oakland’s Travis Bader for the NCAA Division I mark.
Best Former High School Math Teacher
Buffalo’s Nate Oats used to teach five math classes a day at Romulus High School in Michigan, and now the 44-year-old is among the top coaching candidates in the country. Oats has led Buffalo to a third consecutive NCAA Tournament and is a year removed from stunning Arizona.
Best Chance For A Vacated Title
If you enjoy NCAA schadenfreude (and who doesn’t?) then cheer for LSU to reach the Final Four and cut down the nets. Their coach (Will Wade) is suspended for allegedly being caught on a wiretap discussing an “offer” to a recruit, believed to be guard Javonte Smart.
Best Hair
The only thing better than Coby White’s game may be his Afro. The North Carolina freshman guard ditched the ’fro for a hair bun earlier in the season, but it made a triumphant return in February.
