VIC CANGIALOSI
1 – American Pharoah: Nobody wins from the rail. But he’s the best horse in a short field and Espinoza will have him positioned to pounce down the backside. Overcomes tactical disadvantage. Puts 100,000 fannies in the Belmont seats.
2 – Dortmund: Baffert runs 1-2. Undefeated until Pharoah beat him fair and square at Churchill. May give rival trouble into the clubhouse turn, but can’t envision a change in the outcome.
3 – Danzig Moon: Offers best value. Canadian colt checked in a stalking fifth two weeks ago and may upgrade position in the shorter second jewel.
DEBBIE LITTLE
1 – American Pharoah: Covered more ground in the Derby and still easily closed to win in slow fractions. Looks hard to beat.
2 – Firing Line: Game second to Pharoah in the Derby. Logical choice to complete short exacta.
3 – Bodhisattva: Would you take me by the hand? Can you show me the shine of your Japan, the sparkle of your china?
JOHN SUTTON
1 – Dortmund: Didn’t run his best race in the Derby, but should return to his top form in this spot.
2 – American Pharoah: Best horse in the race gets hurt a bit by the rail draw. May not like dirt in his face.
3 – Danzig Moon: Had troubled trip in Derby, but still finished fifth. Should be charging hard late.
HONDO
1 – Firing Line: Can’t dismiss Firing Line after his rapid run for the Roses. The Preak Show’s closer finish line will help him repel all challengers.
2 – Danzig Moon: The Canadian hoofer fortunately won’t be distracted by Rangers-Lightning, which should be finished by post time, so a silvery “Moon” is possible.
3 – Dortmund: The descendant of Big Brown craps out in the stretch again.
