Three years ago, Casey Powell came to the New York Titans when the franchise was an expansion team. In struggling to a 4-12 mark that year, the Titans weren’t exactly a feared team by other members of the National Lacrosse League.

“We were the laughing stock of the league our first year,” Powell said. “Everyone enjoyed playing us.”

Since then, the Titans have dramatically improved. After reaching the East Division Championship Game last season, the Titans have made it all the way to the NLL’s Championship Game tonight, where they’ll take on the Calgary Roughnecks in Calgary.

“We’ve had a lot to prove,” said Powell, a first-team All-Pro selection after finishing the regular season with 40 goals and 45 assists. “We were laughed at in year one, and we have a lot of competitive guys on the team and we’ve worked really hard to get to this point.”

Calgary and New York faced each other once this year, with the Roughnecks coming away with a 12-10 win in a meeting Feb. 28 at the Garden.

Powell is confident he and his teammates can bring home the title they have been working toward since they came to New York.

“We’ve had a lot to prove,” he said. “We have a lot of competitive guys on the team, and we’ve worked hard to get to this point. We’re just gonna give it our best effort and see what happens.”
