Tom Durkin, arguably the most decorated horse race announcer ever, is coming out of retirement to call the Belmont Stakes in June on Fox.
The 72-year-old Durkin, who has called over 80,000 races, retired in 2014 after a 43-year career.
Prior to his full retirement, he stepped away from the Kentucky Derby in 2011 after a decade calling the sport’s biggest race, citing years of debilitating anxiety.
Fox Sports announced Thursday that Durkin would be making his return to the broadcast booth.
“The Belmont Stakes has been an iconic part of sports culture for more than 150 years,” Durkin in a statement. “There is nothing like the energy and enthusiasm around Belmont Park with a Triple Crown on the line. It is the apotheosis of excitement.”
“We are honored to have the legendary Tom Durkin return for the Belmont Stakes this year,” Fox Sports president of production and operations Brad Zager said. “When it became official that an iconic piece of the historic Triple Crown would air on FOX, we knew it could only be complete with Tom’s voice as the soundtrack.”
Tom Durkin will come out of retirement to call the 2023 Belmont Stakes. APWhen he decided to step away from the Kentucky Derby, Durkin spoke to NPR about how anxiety over calling the Race for the Roses would creep into his dreams for months.
“I have crazy nightmares. And most of the time, I just can’t get to the announcer’s booth, or someone has spray painted my binoculars, and I can’t see through, or the lenses has fallen out of my binoculars, or the horses starting running on the ground,” Durkin said in 2011.
“One time, I was — in my subconscious mind, I was calling the Kentucky Derby, and a Norwegian cruise liner came down the stretch.

The New York Racing Association Saratoga Walk of Fame inductee Tom Durkin, left, talks to newly inducted 2015 member Ogden Mills Phipps. AP“And I couldn’t see the horses. Like, oh my God. Those are big ships, too. Can’t see many horses behind them.”
In 2014, the New York Times said that Durkin was “widely considered the greatest race caller in the history of thoroughbred racing.”
The Belmont Stakes, the third leg of horse racing’s triple crown following the Derby and this weekend’s Preakness Stakes, is set for June 10.
