Trainer Rick Dutrow Jr., no stranger to being penalized for a variety of violations over the years, has been suspended by the NY State Racing and Wagering Board for 60 days.

The suspension came after the drug Butorphanol – “a commonly used narcotic for pain relief in horses,” according to Wikipedia – was found in the post-race sample of his horse Fastus Cactus after the gelding finished first in the third race at Aqueduct last Nov. 20.

Fastus Cactus won by three lengths as the even-money favorite, despite drifting out badly through the stretch.

Fastus Cactus was disqualified and unplaced. Dutrow, whose top 3-year-old, Boys At Tosconova, was declared off the Derby trail last week, can continue to train after getting a stay of his suspension upon appeal.
