WASHINGTON — Ty Outlaw, the Virginia Tech sharpshooter charged with a misdemeanor count of marijuana possession this week, will be available to play for the Hokies on Friday, the school announced.

They will meet No. 1 Duke in an East Region semifinal at MCI Center.

Fourth-seeded Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams said Thursday the 6-foot-6 Outlaw passed a drug test Wednesday from an “outside agency” after his apartment in Blacksburg, Va., was searched by police on March 21 while he was with the team in California. Athletic director Whit Babcock made the decision to let Outlaw play.

“Ty’s handled everything perfect,” Williams said. “He’s been transparent not only with me, but with all the authorities involved. I think we’ve handled it perfectly.”

There was a disturbance that led to a search warrant, resulting in police finding drugs in the apartment. It all took place while Outlaw was with the team out West.

Outlaw, a senior, is averaging 8.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and shooting 45.6 from 3-point range. He has produced 8.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in two NCAA Tournament games.
