The third bout between WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder is expected to be pushed back because of the coronavirus pandemic, a report said.
“Clearly not,” Top Rank chairman Bob Arum told ESPN on Tuesday when asked if the bout would take place July 18, as scheduled. “We don’t even know if the MGM will even be open by then.”
With most of the sports world on hiatus because of the virus, Arum said the big-money rematch may have to wait until the fall.
“You could not guarantee the fighters that the event would take place on that date. We couldn’t convince them or ourselves,” Arum said. “Where were they going to train for it? It just made no sense. You just have to take a step back. How are you going to sell tickets? It’s absolutely ridiculous to say the fight is on when the Brits can’t even get there.”
The Las Vegas casinos have been shut down by the Nevada government, and air travel restrictions between the United States and Britain, among other countries, have been enacted because of the coronavirus.
Fury defeated Wilder by TKO in the seventh round to earn the WBC title and the lineal heavyweight championship in February. Wilder picked up the contractual option to ask for a third fight that was to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on July 18.
Arum said both Top Rank Boxing, the co-promoter along with Frank Warren for Fury, and Premier Boxing Champions, the promoter for Wilder, are on board to move the fight toward the fall.
