The United States’ World Cup opener against England Saturday was one of the most highly-anticipated games the national team has ever played, and the TV ratings bear that out.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw with England was the most-viewed World Cup group stage game ever on ABC, and the fifth most-viewed World Cup match ever. It was the most watched U.S. soccer game since 1994.

The two-hour match window averaged a 7.3 household rating (8,391,000 households and 12,956,000 viewers), based on fast nationals, and the three-hour broadcast _ including an hour pregame _ did a 6.1. A total of 3.8 million watched in Spanish on Univision.

The three-hour broadcast ranked fifth all-time, behind the United States’ Round of 16 tilt against powerhouse Brazil back in 1994 and three World Cup finals (including the United States women against China in 1999).
