John W. Henry backed Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson on Saturday, but said he could not offer him any guarantees over his long-term future at the English Premier League soccer club.
Hodgson, who took the Liverpool hot seat in July, came under fire in recent weeks following the Reds’ dismal start to the season, with the Merseyside club currently standing 13th in the table.
Asked whether the experienced Englishman was the right man for the job, Henry said, “He certainly is at this point.”
But the Boston Red Sox owner, who took over at Anfield in October with his company New England Sports Ventures, said, “I can’t make any promises about the future for anything in the organization, because two months ago I didn’t know that much about English football.”
More positively for former Fulham boss, he added, “We tend to stay with our managers and our general managers. Roy didn’t build this team so I think he has been unfairly criticized this year.”
