The two players were transported to UAB Hospital and are in stable condition.

The school has yet to release any of the names involved.

“UAB Police and Public Safety is investigating an assault that took place this morning at the Football Operations Center,” the school said in a statement. “Injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. The suspect is in custody, and there is no threat to campus.”

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m.

UAB, which hosted South Florida at Protective Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a 48-18 loss, decided to proceed with the game as scheduled.

“The team elected to play today’s game. UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time,” the school added.

UAB coach Alex Mortensen said after the game that he could not discuss details about the incident.

“More than anything, I’m grateful that those two players are in stable condition, and we will make sure that they have the support that they need,” Mortensen told reporters, according to AL.com. “I hope you will join me in lifting them and their families in your thoughts and prayers, as our team is doing right now too.”

Mortensen said some of his players decided to sit out the contest, but most wanted to play for the seniors who were playing in their last home game.

“The conversation went back to the seniors, with it being senior day,” Mortensen said. “They wanted to go play for them.”

Mincey was on Kentucky’s roster in 2024 — playing in one game — and transferred to UAB for the 2025 season.
