Ukranian biathlete Anastasiia Laletina pulled out of her race Tuesday in the Paralympics after learning that her father had been captured by Russian troops, according to reports.
“Her father is a soldier in the Ukrainian army and (was taken) prisoner by Russian soldiers. They beat him,” team spokeswoman Natalia Harach said, per the Daily Beast. “She was very upset and couldn’t take part in the race.”
The 19-year-old Laletina withdrew from the middle distance sitting race after receiving the news but was resting and getting support from the team’s doctor, Harach said, according to Al Jazeera.
Despite competing with heavy hearts, as Russia invades their home country, Ukranian athletes won nine medals on Tuesday. The trio of Iryna Bui, Oleksandra Kononova, and Liudmyla Liashenko swept the podium in the standing middle distance biathlon race, helping to push Ukraine into second in the medal standings.
“We are here to fight for Ukraine, with Ukraine and in the name of Ukraine,” Bui told reporters.
Laletina, who has been unable to walk since childhood, started Para Nordic skiing in 2019, according to her official Paralympics bio page.
