JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — When you watch Thursday night’s NCAA Tournament David vs. Goliath first-round matchup between Kentucky and Abilene Christian at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, be sure to check out the suit worn by Abilene Christian coach Joe Golding.

Golding may have new threads thanks to ripping his suit while hugging one of his assistant coaches during the wild celebration of his team winning the Southland Conference Tournament to qualify for its first NCAA Tournament last weekend.

“It was an incredible embrace that we had the last eight seconds,” Golding said before Thursday night’s game against No. 2 seed Kentucky. “Unfortunately, I ripped my pants.”

Getting a new suit or fixing the ripped slacks when he got back to Abilene, Texas, wasn’t as easy as it might seem.

“We’ve got one suit place in town, that’s it, and they couldn’t get it done,” Golding said. “I guess you’ve got to alter and do some stuff. So I’ve got one suit. I had two suits when the year started. I left one in an airport. True story. Had to go when we played Nicholls State and buy a suit or khaki pants and a shirt.

“I’m coaching them all in my baby blue suit, and I’m going to have a hole in my butt, man. So it is what it is, man. We’re going to be who we are and go out there and embrace it.”

Golding joked he hadn’t gotten his bonus for the year yet and wasn’t sure he could afford a new suit.

“I just found out I don’t get [the bonus] until June 1, I think,” he said. “I heard somebody was going to start a GoFundMe page. I would appreciate it, any help I can get.”

Golding’s team, a 20.5-point underdog, was going to need more help than a tailor Thursday night.
