UNKIND CUT FOR JANZEN
TULSA – Lee Janzen, a two-time winner of the U.S. Open, yesterday was bounced from the 101st Open at Southern Hills because of a minuscule rules infraction.
Janzen, who originally was thought to have made the cut at 5-over (the cut was 6-over), was assessed a two-stroke penalty prior to the start of play yesterday morning for a rules breach that occurred prior to the resumption of Friday morning’s first round.
As a result, Janzen finished at 7-over-par and missed the 36-hole cut.
At 7 a.m. Friday, Janzen used a towel to absorb moisture from the fairway before replacing a ball that was in play. That was a violation of Rule 13-2 (decisions 13-2/35 and 6-8d/1).
Janzen was contacted at 9:45 yesterday morning and notified of the situation.
Janzen was miffed about the decision, but upbeat.
“If I could have got to the red [numbers], I could have won the tournament,” Janzen said. “I was ready to come out here today and shoot a good score. There’s nothing I can do about it now.”
