College football fans headed to the DirecTV Holiday Bowl hoping to see Caleb Williams play for USC are going to be sorely disappointed.
USC football coach Lincoln Riley announced on Monday that Williams would not be playing in the Dec. 27 bowl game taking place at Petco Park.
The Trojans are scheduled to face Louisville.
That means Williams could have very played his final football game in a USC uniform, with the QB mulling over the idea of declaring for the 2024 NFL Draft in April.
By all expectations, Williams will forgo his senior season and he is projected to go No.1 overall in the 2024 draft.
“I have to decide if I’m gonna jump into the water,” Williams told the Southern California News Group a few weeks back, “or if I’m gonna stay and keep walking on the stones.”

Williams rushed for 11 touchdowns and threw five interceptions as well and USC finished the season a disappointing 7-5 as its defense gave up an average 34.9 points per game.
Williams racked up 4,537 passing yards and 42 touchdowns in 2022 – his first season after transferring from Oklahoma – on his way to the Heisman.
The decision for Williams not to play in the Holiday Bowl is another sign he is likely to turn pro and declare for the draft.
That means the bowl game could be a peak into what the future holds for the Trojans’ offense after Williams leaves.
Sophomore Miller Moss is expected to get the start for USC during the Holiday Bowl and Riley told reporters he feels Moss will “fully be in the mix” for the starter job next season.
Moss has 542 passing yards and three touchdown passes to his name in 10 appearances for USC.

“Not ready to say that we will for sure do anything,” Riley said, according to ESPN. “But we’ll take a look and see how it all unfolds.”
