The United States and Spain are locked at one goal apiece at halftime of their first game in the World Cup knockout stage.

Tobin Heath drew a hard foul that sent Megan Rapinoe for a penalty shot at the seventh minute after Spain had controlled a majority of the opening minutes. A low, left-corner rip from Rapinoe put the Americans on the board first.

Shortly after, USA goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher made an easy save and went to roll the ball back in play to a heavily guarded Becky Sauerbrunn. The turnover was sent right to the foot of Spain’s star striker Jenni Hermoso, who sent the ball soaring over Naeher to tie the game.

The teams have exchanged a number of quality chances to follow up the early tallies, with the Americans holding a 7-2 shot advantage.

Rapinoe was issued a yellow card on a runaway play where contact to the face was made with a Spain defender. Alex Morgan, who was subbed out early of the last group-stage matchup with Sweden after taking a hard foul, seemed to take the brunt of Spain’s physicality during the first half.
