Virginia still can reach that elusive Final Four. But it just got a lot harder for the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament to break through.

The Cavaliers will be without valuable wing De’Andre Hunter for the Tournament after the school announced he suffered a broken left wrist in the ACC Tournament in Brooklyn, which was won by Virginia.

The 6-foot-7 Hunter, a redshirt freshman, was averaging 9.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 19.9 minutes per game coming off the bench and was the ACC’s sixth man of the year. He was a key element for the Cavaliers, a strong defender and quality 3-point shooter at 38.2 percent.

Virginia (31-2), the No. 1 seed in the South, hasn’t reached the Final Four since 1984, losing to a lower-seeded opponent in three of the past four tournaments as a No. 1 or No. 2 seed. It likely will have to get past a powerhouse foe in the Sweet 16, either No. 4 Arizona or fifth-seeded Kentucky, in Atlanta.

While the Cavaliers’ stingy defense, which allows a nation-lowest 53.4 points per game, should be fine, taking away one of their best scorers could be a major blow to coach Tony Bennett’s eight-man rotation. Their limited ability on the offense end, after all, is what has held them back in recent seasons.
