While the Knicks were taking care of their future last night in the draft, taking 7-2 center Frederic Weis in the first round with the 15th pick, Jeff Van Gundy met with Garden Guru Dave Checketts during the day.

The two sides would not talk about the meeting, but Van Gundy and Checketts are beginning to talk about the traumatic season that just ended.

Van Gundy will meet with his attorney Rob Ades this weekend to discuss Van Gundy’s future. Barring a compete breakdown in talks, Van Gundy has been assured by Checketts that he will return to coach next season.

It’s believed Van Gundy wants more say in player personnel matters and is trying to get a bigger and longer contract. He is guaranteed $5.5 million over the next two seasons by the Knicks.
