Bruce Vaughan is coming up aces just in time for the Commerce Bank Championship, which starts tomorrow at Long Island’s Eisenhower Park.

Vaughan, a struggling rookie on the Champions Tour, qualified for the tournament Tuesday with an 8-under 64 that included a hole-in-one on the 14th hole of Eisenhower’s White Course. Yesterday, he made another ace on the fifth hole during a practice round on Eisenhower’s Red Course, the one used for the tournament.

“I couldn’t believe it. I figured I better run out and buy some lottery tickets,” said Vaughan, who has only earned $83,875 this year.

After the second ace, he went back to his hotel and called his wife. “I told her I wouldn’t be coming home this weekend because I qualified,” he said. “And Beverly said, ‘I have better news. The USGA called this morning and you’re in the field next week.’ ”

After the Commerce tourney, Vaughan will head to Wisconsin to play in the U.S. Senior Open at Whistling Straits.
