VELASQUEZ BELTS 4-BAGGER
Cornelio Velasquez was the riding star at Aqueduct with four winners on the card as compared to just 13 for the entire meet before yesterday. Jose Espinoza also had a good afternoon, booting home three.
Champagne Stakes winner The Groom Is Red, a Kentucky Derby hopeful trained by Nick Zito and owned by Rick Pitino, makes his first start as a 3-year-old today in an allowance race at Gulfstream Park.
1ST RACE – Kid from the Bronx went to lead hugging rail around first turn under Velasquez and stayed there to wire. Carrbine Special rallied wide for place. Every Move You Make tracked pace, came in bit on Dial Trial far turn but survived steward’s inquiry for show.
2ND RACE – Espinosa on Sweet City Girl tracked lone pacesetter Mystic Pro to stretch and proved best. First-time starter Lattsa Talk finished with vigor up rail for show.
3RD RACE – Outlandish, 2-5 under Aaron Gryder, saved all ground from post one, drafting in behind leaders down backstretch, cruised to lead under hold on turn but had to be used in stretch. Gasper Moschera took him for $35G. Sunshine Sapphire set pace along inside while being pressed by Tundra Bound and hung tough for second.
4TH RACE – Scarlet Sue popped gate, opened daylight and was never threatened, giving Velasquez his second of day. Sun Shine East was clearly second best, with many lengths separating first three finishers.
5TH RACE – Back in Shape gave Espinoza his second, sitting behind pacesetters down backstretch, swinging off rail for drive and drawing away. Bantry Blue easily held place with 1-2 finishers well clear of others.
6TH RACE – Synchronized tracked pacesetter Silent Serenade, caught her midstretch and wore her down late to give Espinoza three-bagger. Silent Serenade, favored at 7-5, was sent early from post 5, dropped over to rail but could not last.
7TH RACE – Ian’s Thunder, midpack early, saved ground turn, split horses top of stretch and rallied up rail under Velasquez. Deputy General rallied wide on far turn. Alyswell kicked in late to get nod for show.
8TH RACE – Kashatreya, checked briefly down backside, bided time behind quick pace, rallied on turn while in behind horses and finished with power, shooting through hole in deep stretch to take command. Julio Pezua rode.
9TH RACE – Machine to Tower, fifth winner from post one, saved ground tracking pace, swung off rail on far turn, put pacesetting longshot Flash and Thunder in tight quarters going past in stretch but number stayed up after inquiry to give Velasquez fourth winner.
