Hall-of-Fame jockey John Velazquez, 41, the regular rider of top Kentucky Derby contenders Verrazano and Orb, suffered what is described as a slight fracture of his first rib on the ride side and a small bone chip near his right wrist when he fell after his mount clipped heels in Sunday’s seventh race at Aqueduct, according to his valet, Tony Millan.
“He’ll follow up with his doctor this week and we’ll know more,” Millan said. “The good news is that these appear to be relatively minor injuries.”
It’s not known yet whether Velazquez will still be able to ride in the Derby on May 4.
