The Nets’ extended family increased by one yesterday. Vince Carter and his wife, Ellen, became parents for the first time with the birth of daughter Kai Michelle, who checked in at 6 pounds and 19 inches. The Nets said mother, father and daughter are doing fine.

Meanwhile, the Nets are scheduled to work out Mississippi high school phenom Monta Ellis, a 6-foot-3 guard who averaged close to 40 points a game, with a high of 72. Out of Lanier High, Ellis, who had planned on attending Mississippi State, is projected as a first-round pick.
