Mets’ and ESPN play-by-player Dave O’Brien has received an offer that he may be forced to refuse. The Cubs’ TV station, WGN, has solicited O’Brien with a long-term, fulltime deal, but O’Brien yesterday told The Post that ESPN, for which he has called 80-plus games per for the last three years, “seems reluctant to let me go.”

Fine by us. O’Brien, 41 and a Boston native, has been a highly credible fit here since he joined Ch. 11’s Met crew, two years ago – 50 games per, teamed with Tom Seaver – following nine years as the Marlins’ (first) play-by-player. With one season left on both his ESPN and Met deals, O’Brien would make a solid choice to stick here, especially with the Mets developing their own network.

The Cubs’ popular longtime analyst Steve Stone recently resigned following a hassle with team members, including manager Dusty Baker. WGN has since hired Bob Brenly to replace Stone. Play-by-player Chip Caray, less popular in Chicago than Stone, has left to join his father, Skip, on Braves’ telecasts over TBS.
