WHATEVER IT TAKES
JET REPORT CARD
QUARTERBACKS: C
Quincy Carter (11-of-20, 116 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 67.9 rating) was rattled by the blitzing Browns early, but recovered to help deliver a victory.
RUNNING BACKS: B+
Curtis Martin (17-88) ran well before and after hurting his right knee. LaMont Jordan (18-73) showed why he’s so valuable as the second punch after Martin.
WIDE RECEIVERS: C+
The play of the day was made by Jus tin McCareins (6-71, 1 TD), who stretched for a first down on the game- deciding drive, then made the game-winning catch. Santana Moss (2-25) made a key catch and run to set up the score.
TIGHT ENDS: C
Blocking was strong for Martin and Jordan from Anthony Becht. Chris Baker didn’t play.
OFFENSIVE LINE: C+
Though Carter was sacked six times, including five in the first 17 minutes, it wasn’t all the line’s fault. Run blocking was solid in the second half.
DEFENSIVE LINE: B
DE John Abraham (six tackles) had a good game against the run and was close to several sacks with pressures. NT Jason Ferguson and DT Dewayne Robertson were active against the run.
LINEBACKERS: B
Eric Barton led the way with 10 tackles, while Jonathan Vilma had six. A good job against the run, with the Browns running for only 99 yards.
SECONDARY: B
Though he did drop a sure INT, safety Erik Coleman had the Jets’ only sack and it was a big one, forcing the Browns to punt late. CBs David Barrett, Donnie Abraham and Terrell Buckley helped shut the passing game down.
SPECIAL TEAMS: C
P Toby Gowin made two saving tackles of Dennis Northcutt in punt coverage. WR Jerricho Cotchery, returning KOs for the first time, ran his only attempt back 30 yards.
KICKING GAME: B
Gowin had a very good game, averaging 41.6 yards gross on eight punts. K Doug Brien had his first FG attempt blocked and made his second.
COACHING: B
Give Herman Edwards this: He doesn’t panic, and nor does his team. Offensive coordinator Paul Hackett took too long to try to get the ball to Moss and McCareins on shorter passes. He did make a good adjustment at the half to have Carter get rid of the ball quicker.
