WHISTLIN’ ‘DIXIE’ IS BIG HIT
Bought In Dixie impressed everyone by winning yesterday’s sixth race in a very fast time.
Jockey Jean-Luc Samyn tried stalking the early pace but was dragged to the lead by Bought In Dixie. Running with Montana Bill into the stretch, he slowly pulled away to a 2-length victory. Despite racing on the wrong lead throughout, he went the six furlongs in 1:08 2/5.
That was enough to convince Allen Jerkens to nominate him to the mile-and-an-eighth Riva Ridge on Belmont Stakes day. Nominations for the race close tomorrow. His only worry is the fact Bought In Dixie doesn’t switch leads and he could tire going the longer distance. But with a performance like this, you have to consider racing him in stakes company next time out.
Jorge Chavez and Jerry Bailey won two races on the card along with trainer Robert Klesaris.
1ST RACE – Track was listed as good for the start of racing. Black Tiger stalked the early pace set by Becky Slater and took lead entering stretch. She drew off to an easy victory. Second place finisher Mayicutin made move around far turn forcing Winoneforgrandpa to race wide.
2ND RACE – Midway into the far turn, Ariel Smith aboard April’s Benefit, last down the backstretch, saw a huge opening on the rail and went for it. He got the lead and was all out to hold off the resilient Hightshift by a head. Hightshift, who was acting up in the gate, went for the lead when it opened and was strong in the stretch drive.
3RD RACE – Billstown was easily the best. Cabrita Point made two moves for the lead and Billstown was able to withstand him each time and drew off to lengthy score. Cabrita Point held on well for second.
5TH RACE – Durmiente made his local debut for Robert Klesaris a winning one. He let Outamyway Sir set the early pace of 23, but the next quarter went in 22 4/5 and that was enough to do leader in. Durmiente stalked that pace and took over as they entered stretch. Fortress Strong was far back early, angled outside entering far turn, raced wide into stretch then bore out while tiring in final drive.
7TH RACE – The race wasn’t run in slow motion in the stretch, those horses were just slow. Compass Rose held off the challenges of Bebop Blues, Prideful and Worlsigold in the stretch to break her maiden, despite running the final three-eighths of a mile in 42 seconds. If any of these horses come back on dirt in near future, look for a stranger.
8TH RACE – Sky Approval didn’t want to load at first but once he did, he ran down early pacesetter Be Accountable to win the feature. Be Accountable withstood the early speed duel with Said Enough and was still able to hold off Canadeed to hold second.
9TH RACE – Silk Broker went back to running style he used to break his maiden by setting early pace. He looked like a winner for most of the stretch until caught late by Pooska Hill and losing photo at the wire. Dots Pleasure, who won both races in career by setting pace throughout, was rated and was never a threat. He needs to set the pace.
