It’s being billed as the biggest fight in the history of women’s boxing, which is a matter of opinion but of some relevance in that it’s a matchup seldom seen in a sport starving for attention.

Two-time Olympic Gold medal winner Claressa Shields will take on Christina Hammer on April 13 in Atlantic City for the undisputed women’s middleweight championship. The fight will be shown live on Showtime from Boardwalk Hall and has been supported by All-Access programming available on various digital platforms.

“This has been long overdue,” Shields said recently. “I’m just glad that Hammer is here and the fight is set. She’s been at my fights before, but I can’t wait to get inside the ring and show her I’m the real champion.”

Hammer is equally eager to prove her skills.

“I’m very glad to make this fight happen,” she said. “I want to show the world who I am.”

The unification bout is seen as a major step for women’s boxing to lead a televised main event, something that was unheard of until recently.

“This isn’t just an important women’s fight,” said Stephen Espinoza, the president of sports and event programming for Showtime Networks. “This isn’t just a high-quality women’s boxing match. This is a high-quality boxing match. This is an important fight. This is one of the best fights that can be made in the sport.”

Shields (8-0, two knockouts) faces Hammer (24-0, 11 KOs) in a battle of unbeaten champions. Hammer normally fights in Germany, but took the fight because of the exposure.

“This is a big risk to come from Germany to the U.S.,” she said. “But I believe the best should fight the best and I did what I had to do so that this could happen. This fight can be a game changer for our sport.”

Women’s boxing, long overlooked, is starting to gain exposure with the emergence of Shields and other noteworthy champions like Cecilia Braekhus of Norway. It still doesn’t get the attention women’s fighters in the UFC receive. But a good showing by Shields and Hammer could go a long way toward lifting the profile of women’s boxing.

“This fight is the real deal,” Hammer said. “This is going to be a game changer for women’s boxing. I think we’re going to inspire a lot of female athletes who want to live their dream. It’s motivation for everyone.”

Shields called it a “real super fight” for women’s boxing.

“We’ve never had a fight like this in women’s boxing,” Shields said. “It’s great to make this happen. And us being from two parts of the world makes this fight even better.”

The fight figures to be a good draw for Atlantic City, which is starting to settle into its new era of sports gambling. Shields versus Hammer is a 50-50 fight that should offer good value for the entertainment.

“These two fighters can be an example for a lot of male boxers,” said Tom Loeffler, Hammer’s adviser. “These are two undefeated fighters in their prime putting it all on the line to show who is the best. You don’t see that very often these days.“This is going to be a fun promotion. Claressa will be coming forward with her style and tenacity, going up against Christina’s experience. It’s for all the marbles.”
