The Mets were one of several teams linked to Bobby Abreu, before the free agent signed with the Angels yesterday.
But with Abreu now an Angel, it could open up another free-agent possibility for the Mets. The Angels outfield is now too crowded for the team to consider re-signing Garret Anderson, according to the Los Angeles Times.
The Mets could likely get Anderson, 36, at a reasonable price and a short-term contract if they got involved in the bidding. And he would be able to compete for the starting leftfielder’s job now occupied by a platoon of Fernando Tatis and Daniel Murphy.
But Anderson’s agent Scott Boras seems to be trying to push his client North to Seattle. . . not East.
“They need him to give that team a representative middle of the lineup,” Boras told the Seattle Post Intelligencer on Friday.
“Garret knows the division’s pitching. He hits the West well, and he’s good for young hitters to be around and it’s a good fit.”
While the Mets are all set in the middle of the lineup, they could use some help towards the bottom. And the Amazin’s would represent a much better chance for Anderson to reach the postseason than he would have with the Mariners. Also worth considering is the fact the Mariners seem more interested in going after Ken Griffey Jr., who had tremendous seasons in Seattle.
Anderson hit .293 with 15 home runs, 84 RBIs and 66 runs scored while playing in 145 games last year in Anaheim.
