Saturday is the 143th running of the Preakness, and here are The Post’s staff picks:
Vic Cangialosi
1: Good Magic: Better in Derby loss than he was winning the Blue Grass. Will he narrow the gap or steal the second jewel? His turn.
2. Justify: If you are a fan, sit back and enjoy. Risk outweighs the reward by far. Same number (7), same weather (wet). Same result? Maybe, maybe not.
3: Quip: Might be a long way back to third. Trainer Rodolphe Brisset had pointed him to Pimlico’s tight turns and distance. Goes early; gives way. Best of the rest.
Debbie Little
1. Justify: Bob Baffert has won the Preakness six times and is a perfect 4-for-4 when his starters also won the Derby. With an off track in the forecast, this selection seems justified.
2. Bravazo: D. Wayne Lukas has also won this race six times and only once with a favorite. After the traffic jam in the Derby, this colt should appreciate the smaller field.
3. Good Magic: Chad Brown is 1-for-1 in the Preakness and is focused on back-to-back victories in this race. Derby runner-up could definitely turn the table on Justify.
Anthony Barstow
1. Quip: Skipped the Derby to target this race, took a huge step two back and looks primed to do it again on a sloppy track where he can stick close to the lead, then pounce.
2. Justify: It’s asking a lot for such a lightly raced horse to come back on two weeks’ rest and win another jewel in the Crown. Pace in the mud will leave him a step behind.
3. Lone Sailor: Caught a bad break in the Derby, and post 2 won’t do him any favors, but with a less crowded field, he should get away fine, and his only win came on a wet track.
