It was a locker room celebration made for 2020.

The Wisconsin Badgers won the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Wednesday, defeating Wake Forest 42-28 behind three total touchdowns from redshirt freshman QB Graham Mertz. But while Mertz took care of the Demon Deacons, he didn’t take as much care of the trophy his team took home for their efforts.

A video from the Badgers’ locker room celebration shows Mertz dancing in the locker room with the glass trophy in hand – then dropping it on the floor, where it immediately shattered.

News appeared to spread that the trophy was broken before the video leaked, but the Badgers were originally tight-lipped – head coach Paul Chryst said he was “not under oath, so I don’t know if I have to speak,” while linebacker Jack Sanborn said “no comment.”

But Mertz eventually copped to being the culprit, saying in the postgame press conference, “I dropped it. That’s on me.” He also posted an image to his Instagram story where he replaced the trophy with an actual bottle of Duke’s Mayo.
