TIN CUP (1996)
Rated R
Streaming: Amazon Prime
The annual battle for the Green Jacket was supposed to take place this weekend at Augusta National, so we’re hitting the links for our daily suggestion to help fill your Masters void.
The second sports collaboration between director Ron Shelton and star Kevin Costner took them from the minor league bus rides of “Bull Durham” to this romantic comedy about a Texas driving-range instructor’s quest to qualify for and win the U.S. Open.
Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy is a washed-out former collegiate golfer who is approached for lessons by clinical psychologist Dr. Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) and then by her boyfriend, Roy’s smarmy former rival David Simms (Don Johnson), to caddy for him at a local charity tournament.
After mocking Simms for laying up in front of a water hazard on what he perceives to be a makeable shot at the green, McAvoy pulls out a golf ball and club and proves himself right, getting fired on the spot for showing up his boss.
With Molly, his eventual love interest, providing psychological assistance — and with his friend Romeo (the great Cheech Marin) as his caddy and golfing conscience — a determined Roy gets through a local qualifying tournament to earn an unlikely U.S. Open berth.
Shockingly atop the leaderboard, however, Roy melts down in the final round, stubbornly blowing a chance at winning the major tournament with the same go-for-it approach, when playing it safe would’ve sealed the championship.
Notably, Costner’s golf consultant for the film, former pro and longtime announcer Gary McCord, once similarly carded a 16 on one hole at the 1986 FedEx Classic.
And if you’re looking for a Masters connection, defending champ Sergio Garcia suffered what widely was dubbed a “Tin Cup” moment in 2018, knocking five shots into the water for a 13 on No. 15 in the first round.
Quote of Note: “When a defining moment comes along, you define the moment … or the moment defines you.” Roy “Tin Cup” McAvoy
