Caitlin Clark is progressing toward a return to action.

The second-year Fever star has been out since she sustained a left quad strain on May 26, but coach Steph White told reporters Monday that her star player is “ramping back up” and able to participate in “some practicing.”

“We’re going to be smart, and we’re going to be cautious and we’re going to play the long game and work her back in very intentionally,” White said.

Indiana is 2-2 in since the injury to Clark, who will not play Tuesday night against the Atlanta Dream as her first absence as a collegian or pro extends further.

Clark’s injury had been re-evaluated over the weekend. Initially, the quad issue was set to sideline her for two weeks.

Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham has also been working her way back from an ankle injury she suffered on May 30, and she, too, participated in limited practice on Monday.

“We’ve got to work both [Clark] and Sophie back into, are they in basketball condition? What does it mean to go live? It’s one thing to do shooting drills, it’s another thing to get out there on the floor, get back into movement patterns, rhythm, timing,” White said.

The coach added that the Fever are “picking and choosing” things for Clark and Cunningham to participate in during practices to monitor their progression.

“Both of them, being out long for long periods of time, you’ve got to work your way back into being game ready,” White said.

White provided no specifics on when Clark or Cunningham could play their first games back, but after Tuesday’s matchup with Atlanta, Indiana’s next game is a Saturday matinee with the Liberty in Indianapolis.

New York (8-0) is one of two remaining undefeated teams in the WNBA, although the team is dealing with injury issues of its own.

Star center Jonquel Jones went down with a right ankle problem in last Thursday’s 86-78 win over the Washington Mystics, and her status is unknown for Tuesday’s game against the Chicago Sky and beyond.
